Lake High School students and staff filled sand bags and helped Findlay residents clean out their flood-damaged homes Friday, March 4.
The 175 students and 20 staff members wanted to volunteer because other communities helped clean up their high school when it was destroyed by a tornado last June.
“Giving back is a great thing,” Lake senior Casey Witt said. “After our event (the tornado) this past summer, we can’t give back everything that we received, but we can pay it forward, and that’s what we’re trying to do today.”
The United Way of Hancock County arranged for the volunteers to work in flooded areas such as Brookside, East View, Emory Adams, Spring Lake and West View.
“My first thought was not how much work needed to be done or the number of workers, but the size of their hearts,” Beverly Phillips, United Way Community Services Director, said. “It builds my confidence in the next generation.”
