Students from band, orchestra and choir will perform at the Ohio Music Education Association solo and ensemble event Feb. 19 at Lima Senior High School.
Students will play an instrument or sing solo or in a group for a judge, who rates them on a one to five scale.
“It’s nerve-wracking,” sophomore Taylor Shellito said. “You think you did well, but then you get in front of the judges and freak out because you messed up a scale.”
Musicians can participate simply to test their skills or to improve resumés for music camps and college.
“I plan to go into music, so participating in this looks good on a resumé,” junior Leah Olson said. “(Receiving a one rating) also helped me get a scholarship to Blue Lake (Fine Arts Camp), which is two weeks of orchestra intensives where you play for hours at a time.”
